The Dutch criminal justics system has, for some time, been famous for its mildness. This mildness, which has been reflected for example in a strikingly low prison rate, has both impressed and shocked foreign criminal law scholars and criminal justice officials.;However, this traditional mildness is now at state. Crime has increased considerable and so has the prison rate. Major changes have taken place in Dutch society, and these require a new criminal justice policy. In 1985 the Minister of Justice submitted a new policy plan to the Parliament, called ""Society and Crime"" and a new plan called ""Law in Motion"" was published in 1990.;This work describes the current status of the law and incorporates the recent changes.

Contents:
Criminal law statutes; procedural law statutes; acts on the court system and the enforcement of criminal justice; the fundamental principles of criminal law and procedures; the organization of the investigation and criminal procedure; sentencing and the system of sanctions; suspended sentence and probation; the prison system and after-care of prsoners; plans for reform; key indicators on the operation of the criminal justice system from 1980 to 1990.
