This study brings together two documents first prepared for the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals at the European Parliament. The first part of the work presents a detailed analysis of major areas of concern for animal welfare in Europe and suggests ways in which these might be addressed. It aims to provide a guide to the main aspects of animal welfare which are, or could be, affected by European Community legislation or the work of the Council of Europe and the GATT/WTO. The second part provides a summary of legislation at the levels of the European Community and the Council of Europe, and of judgments of the European Court of Justice, specifically relating to animal welfare matters, major species conservation and habitat protection measures.;This is a reference work for all those with an active interest in issues of animal welfare. The Eurogroup for Animal Welfare brings together the leading animal welfare organizations in the member states of the European Union. Its objective is to provide a unified animal welfare voice with which to lobby the European Institutions and to provide sound scientific evidence and detailed factual information to support arguments for legislative change in the field of animal welfare.
