The quality of the arbitrator is crucial to the conduct of an international arbitrator. It is for that reason that the Roster is a must for all parties involved in an international arbitration proceeding. This readily accessible format of the Roster allows one to locate arbitrators alphabetically, also noting nationality, language, and more than 110 areas of specialization. This practical research tool also includes the International Bar Association (IBA), American Arbitration Association (AAA) and American Bar Association (ABA) Codes of Ethics for Internat ional Arbitrators, background information and a bibliography.
In 1989, the Parker School of Columbia University School of Law published its Guide to International Arbitration and Arbitrators. This publication was the first ever to offer detailed biographies of persons eligible for appointment as an international arbitrator. The second edition of the Guide, published in 1992, contained more than double the number of names listed in the first. Now the 30th Edition contains over 1,000 Arbitrators with accompanying biographies detailing expertise and qualifications for appointment as arbitrator.
The impact of the Roster has not gone unnoticed and has stimulated imitation. But the Roster continues to be unique in determining whom it will list by reference to objective standard relating to arbitration experience, in the detail of the information it provides about each person it lists, and in not permitting a person whose name is listed to pay for being listed. We are confident that this will continue to make the Roster the preeminent work in the field.
