The biography of Thomas Erskine, the First Baron Erskine, 1750-1823. He was Member of Parliament for Portsmouth. At the age of 33, he became a King's Counsel, and his defence of Thomas Paine's 'Rights of Man' cost him the post of Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales.

At the age of 56, he was appointed Lord Chancellor, for just one year. He continued to take part in celebrated trials, such as the prosecution of Queen Caroline for adultery.
