...from the Preface
Over thirty-five years have passed since the third edition of this work. In that time there have been five major decisions by the House of Lords, seven reports to Parliament, four Acts amending the Limitation Act t 1939, a consolidation Act (the Limitation Act 1980) and three Acts amending the Limitation Act 1980.

The result is that the third edition, though a work of great scholarship, is not of much assistance to those who want or need to discover the current law. The title Limitation of Actions in Halsbury's Laws of England (4th Edition) is similarly out of date, having been published before the Limitation Act 1980, the Latent Damage Act 1986 and the Consumer Protection Act 1987 were passed.

No general textbook on the English law of limitation has been published since 1959. The writer hopes that this edition will provide at least a source where the statutes currently in force can be found and at best some assistance in understanding them. The law is stated as at 1 January 1989.
