Williams marks almost exactly the centenary of the two far reaching enactments of the year 1869, nemely the Bankruptcy Act, which extended the benefits of bankruptcy to all persons and not merely 'traders' and the Debtors Act, which substantially abolished imprisonmnt for debt.

Those enactments had prompted the compilation of the first edition of this work, from the pen of the great Roland Vaughn Williams (subsequently Lord Justice), which appeared in 1870...
