This text provides a statement of the law of Scotland regarding crimes against the person as understood and applied by the High Court of Justiciary. Since publication of the first edition there has been a continuous stream of appeal decisions re-examining, inter alia, the law relating to mens rea and scope of defences in relation to assault, culpable homicide, murder and rape, including the recently recognised defences of non-insane automatism and necessity. This edition includes a new chapter on abortion and concealment of pregnancy and new sections on extortion and on insanity in bar of trial.
