Contract Law Today is the product of a collaborative Anglo-French research project funded by the SSRC (now the Economic and Social Research Council) and the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) to encourage comparative research between England and France.

The respective directors of the two research centres (the editors of the present volume), chose the general theme of the evolution of the law of contract in England and France for comparative study. The movement towards harmonization of contract law could, it was thought, be facilitated by achieving a greater understanding of, and knowledge of, the use and definition of fundamental concepts in the two jurisdictions.

The resulting study is therefore a fundamental one, balancing contemporary trends toward empirical research with traditional analytical jurisprudence.
