This is a study of the background to the Gulf War combining aspects of history, politics, diplomacy and law, in the context of the development of a typology of territorial disputes in general. The problems presented by territorial disputes are persistent and are among the most important of our time. The "Falklands war" and the war between Iran and Iraq are recent illustrations of the kind of problems arising out of issues concerning boundaries and validity of title to territory (including maritime rights).
