This is an introductory textbook for the philosphy of law course that is most often taught in philosophy departments, though it is occasionally taught in political science departments as well as in law schools. It presents a basic set of readings in legal philosophy, designed to aid the analysis of cases which form the core of student study in the course. In addition, unlike competing textbooks which place primary emphasis on public law, the book stresses private law cases as well, thus mirroring to some degree the kind of study undertaken in the first year of law school.
