PACE Act 1984: Codes C & H

Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and its Codes of Practice are a vital part of the legislative framework that lays out police powers for combating crime.

Codes of Practice A-G relate to sections 60 and 66 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE). The Codes deal with contacts between the police and public in the exercise of police powers to stop and search; to arrest and to search premises and with the treatment, questioning and identification of suspects and the recording of interviews.

This 2005 edition of the PACE Codes of Practice provides a clear statement of the rights of the individual and the powers of the police. These Codes came into force 1st January 2006, superseding all previous legislation. Among the changes in the 2005 edition of the Codes is the introduction of a new PACE Code on Arrest (Code G).
