Few studies are of more absorbing interest than that of the origin and development of law. This new edition of Dr. Diamond's Primitive Law, which met with such success when it was first published (and which has been out of print for some time), will therefore be greatly welcomed, not only by students of the subject, but also by the non-specialist reader, for whom it is equally suitable.

Dr. Diamond first examines the theory that law is derived from religion, marshalling for that purpose the laws of past ages and the primitive law of the tribes of the present. Then, showing that this history is fallacious and that law has its own history and development, he traces that history according to the stage of economic progress of the peoples of the past and present, irrespective of date, and demonstrates that basically it is a universal history. Studied in this light, many long-prevalent misconceptions are removed.
