Justice of the Peace by the late Sir Leo page was first published in 1936 and quickly established itself as a practical and authoritative handbook, and a new edition revised by the author appeared in 1947.

Changes in the law since then have, however, been so extensive as to render a new and completely revised editiona necessity, and this has been carried out by R.M. Jackson, Downing Professor of the Laws of England at Cambridge, and himself an active member of the magistry, assisted by P.J. Halnan, who is Clerk to Justices, Cambridgeshire.
