Preface... Recent changes in the procedure in the criminal courts, the extended facilities -for legal aid in civil proceedings and the Reports of the Evershed Committee have made a new edition of this work desirable.
The opportunity has also been taken to revise the earlier chapters on legal history in the light particularly of two publications of the Selden Society, Select Cases of Procedure without Writ, edited by Mr. H. G. Richardson and Professor Sayle, and Mr. G. J. Turner's edition of the Brevia Placitata so happily recovered by the Society and posthumously published after the proofs of a great part of the text had lain for forty years in the vaults of the Cambridge University Press.
