This is the first revision since publication in 1909. The text of the lectures has been left unchanged except for the omission of two highly technical. and now obsolete passages.

The notes to the text, however, which were not Maitland's own work, have been considerably altered or added to, and several longer. notes are added at the end of the appropriate chapters. The lectures on The Forms of Action are not included in this edition but are now published separately.
