The Institutes of Gaius though written in the second. century, remain unsurpassed as a first book of law. The accidents of history have made them also indispensable for the study of Roman Law, which the devetopment of comparative legal studies renders even more important.

The existing editions which provide an English translation, excellent as they are, have fallen seriously out of date owing to the more recent discovery of lost passages. Thus a new English edition has become a pressing scholastic need, and it is in order to meet this need that the present edition has been published.
