The contents of this book comprise a selection of articles which have appeared weekly, during the past year, in the pages of the Justice of the Peace and Local Government Review.
I am indebted to the courtesy of the Proprietors of that Journal for the opportunity to reprint them. I desire particularly to express my grateful thanks to their Manager, Mr. Barry Rose, from whom I have received nothing but kindness and encouragement which have made my weekly task a pleasure.
I gratefully acknowledge also the skill and aptitude which Mr. Leslie Starke has brought to bear upon the illustrations to the text ; the helpful criticisms and devoted interest of my wife, and the happy suggestions continually provided by my father who, though more than halfway through his ninth decade, has been indefatigable in supplying me with likely subjects and proposing methods of treatment, many of which I have deen glad to adopt.
