Dr James Conway Davies died at the age of 79 on 18 July 1971, and it must remain a source of regret that he did not live to see the publication of this catalogue upon which he had been working for the past decade.

Conway Davies was a Master of Arts of the Universities of Wales and Cambridge and a Doctor of Letters of the latter, where he gained the Thelwall Prize in 1917. The greater part of his career was devoted to historical studies and teaching and to the care and publication of original sources for English and Welsh history.
