Henry Fauntleroy, the banker was brought to trial for forging a power of attorney on 3oth October, 1824. The accused was a gentleman of position, and the crime with which he was charged was punishable by death in the open street at the hands of the common hangman.
Fauntleroy had swindled the Bank of England to the amount of £265,000 and he was found guilty and condemned to death. Great efforts were made to secure a reprieve, but the unfortunate banker was hanged in front of Newgate Prison, on 3oth November, 1824 - the last forger to suffer this fate in the UK.
